Save Our Sisters Today http://saveoursisterstoday.com Be the difference you want to see in the world posterous.com Sat, 04 Feb 2012 13:13:33 -0800 SOS and the Super Bowl http://saveoursisterstoday.com/sos-and-the-super-bowl http://saveoursisterstoday.com/sos-and-the-super-bowl The weekend for the big game has finally arrived! On Sunday afternoon, our nation will gather to watch the most anticipated sport's event of the year. For most of us, this time is filled with dips, commercials, and fellowship- but for thousands of girls nationwide this weekend brings forth horror.

Shockingly, the Super Bowl is one of the largest sources of mass trafficking in our country. As a result of the large male population gathered at the game, the demand for girls heightens. At the Super Bowl in 2010, estimates of 10,000 women and children were trafficked the area for the sole purpose of sexual exploitation. As awareness of this travesty has grown, law enforcement has taken steps to crack down on this evil crime. However, perpetrators still use this event to strategically traffic children and women. This tragedy not only affects young girls, but also boys as well. We are not by any means saying that all men at the Super Bowl will participate in such activities.

Yet, we are aware that sexual slavery is reality; the fastest growing crime in our world today. Our country is not exempt from this statistic.

From a ministry standpoint, the Super Bowl is yet another reminder to PRAY on behalf of the captives. As believers in the body of Christ, such injustice should burden us and call our hearts to action.

May the words of O Church Arise stir your heart to prayer:

With shield of faith and belt of truth....
We’ll stand against the devil’s lies....
An army bold whose battle-cry is Love...
Reaching out to those in darkness
...

Thu, 05 Jan 2012 10:28:19 -0800 PASSION :: 2012~ http://saveoursisterstoday.com/passion-2012 http://saveoursisterstoday.com/passion-2012  As many of you know, over the last couple days Louie Giglio and Chris Tomlin's Passion Conference has been taking place at the Georgia Dome. There were over 42,000 18-25 year old students gathered together for the sole purpose of lifting the name of Jesus.

Louie Giglio has a huge vision for this generation and through things like Passion, gives specific opportunities to grow in our personal faith and confidence on the Gospel. With a huge emphasis on the power of each of us coming together, Passion always has MAJOR goals for the offerings they take up. Just because they're 'poor' college kids, doesn't mean God can't use us all!

The focus for this year, Passion 2012, was SLAVERY. The goal: to raise ONE MILLION dollars to support 6 anti-slavery organizations across the globe. This morning was the closing session of the conference and Louie shared the incredible totals of the past couple days.

Money will be given to the A21 Campaign (www.thea21campaign.org) to support a prevention program that will educate 48,000 Ukrainian women and girls about how to avoid the sex industry.

Tiny Hands International (www.tinyhandsinternational.org) will receive funding for 8 boarder control stops along the Nepal/India boarder to prevent trafficking, and 8 safe homes for rescued victims.

The International Justice Mission (www.ijm.org) can now conduct 38 rescue operations across the nations that will relieve numerous who have been held captive.

25 children will know and experience true restoration and freedom through the Hagar International (www.hagarinternational.org).

Atlanta apartments will be renovated and turned into refuge for those trafficking in and out of the city of Atlanta.

The mayor of Atlanta received $100,000 to go into the Atlanta police force with a keen awareness and sensitivity to human trafficking in their town.

The Not For Sale Campaign (www.notforsalecampaign.org) will be conducting a vocational training seminar in Chennae, India as a step in PREVENTING trafficking. Not Foe Sale will also open the doors of a new safe home in Cape Town, South Africa for rescued victims.

Night Light (www.nightlightinternational.com) will support the salary, training and care of 15 women in Bankok, Thailand.

The ministry As Our Own (www.asourown.org) will purchase and renovate a building in India that will function as a Innovation Home where education, and prevention of trafficking will happen as they watch the women of the city thrive and grow in right relationships.

Monies sent to the country of Uganda to intercede and prosecute witch doctors who are trafficking children, and the body parts of young children.

Bombay Teen Challenge (www.bombayteenchallenge.org) will open the doors to a new restorative safe home for rescued victims.

Love 146 (love146.org) will rescue 18 children from the hand of slavery and will provide intense training to leaders who will then raise up 1,260 people against trafficking.

Word Made Flesh (www.wordmadeflesh.org) will welcome new survivors as they open doors of a new safe home in Delhi, India.

A safe house will begin operation in the country of Haiti and will rescue and restore children from the streets.

ALL THIS plus more-- Christ will break the bonds of slavery and bring beauty from the ashes of captivity!

The total number of monies raised from Passion 2012 is $3,066,607! OVER THREE MILLION DOLLARS that will be used to break chains in the name of Christ Jesus our Lord who reigns supreme forever! PRAISE GOD! Thee college kids their part-- what will YOUR part be?

Tue, 20 Dec 2011 05:17:40 -0800 Christmas Time is Here! http://saveoursisterstoday.com/christmas-time-is-here http://saveoursisterstoday.com/christmas-time-is-here

Merry Christmas! To celebrate the birth of our Savior, SOS scarves are back!

This year, we have chosen a more modern design for the scarves. They follow
the new look of the "infinity scarves." Each one reminds us that God's love
for us is endless, His mercies have no bounds. In addition, the "SOS"
stitched into each scarf reminds us that we must continue in our pursuit of
justice for each enslaved girl. Please contact us at 336-945-6968 or
info@savingoursisterstoday.com if you would like to purchase an SOS scarf.

As you enjoy all of the cookies and cheer of Christmastime, let this classic
carol turn your attention to the Fatherless. From O Holy Night:

Chains shall He break
For the slave is our brother
And in His Name
All oppression shall cease!

This song holds much more meaning than a simple tune.

It's a challenge to humble ourselves, fall on our knees.  It's a melody of
Scripture, He taught us to love one another. It's a confrontation of
compassion, for the slave is our brother. It's a call to worship, in
grateful chorus raise we.

As the Jews awaited the birth of the Messiah, so these girls await their
rescue. As He was delivered in that stable, so shall these precious children
be delivered from their captors.

"The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me.... to bind up the broken
hearted and release from darkness for the prisoners..." Isaiah 61:1-3

This season is a time of anticipating and rejoicing in our Lord Jesus
Christ. Will you join us in bringing this joy and freedom to those who need
it the most?

Let all within us praise His Holy Name!

Wed, 21 Sep 2011 13:26:19 -0700 FALL IS HERE! http://saveoursisterstoday.com/fall-is-here http://saveoursisterstoday.com/fall-is-here Amidst all of our tea drinking and soup making and candle-lighting as we usher in the approaching season, the girls of SOS have found a new fundraising item! Necklaces! ....From 16:40 Designs... A new line of necklaces we have made, spurred from a personal necklace we purchased from the Freedom Home in Moldova during our visit. The story behind it: 16:40 Designs...

While we were in Moldova we learned a lot about the issue of sex trafficking in that country and the source behind it all. In most of eastern Europe, as well as other countries, children are kicked out of the orphanages where they have grown up the year they turn 16. Thus, the "16" in 16:40 Designs. These children, majority being female, are given the equivalent of 40 American dollars and a bus ticket to their hometown. They are expected to survive. These children have had no love, little to no education, and very few life skills. With only $40 what are they to do? Thus, the "40" in 16:40. All of the "adult" children, at age 16, are kicked out. This happens every June. The traffickers know about this. June is often referred to as the time when "the monsters come out." They wait at bus stations all over Europe, ready to prey on helpless little girls who have no where to go. They make themselves look like the Heros, waiting for the girls to arrive, offering a job and a safe place to stay. But only after they have fallen prey do the girls realize the sickening nightmare that has begun. The heroes turn into monsters. So, through all of this knowledge, we have come up with a new necklace. A sign of Hope to these girls. The basic design is borrowed from a necklace we purchased from the girls at the Freedom Home in Moldova. A way for them to make a living, to support themselves. We have taken this design, multiplied it, and are now selling 16:40 necklaces as a fundraising item for SOS. Our goal is to one day build a physical home where girls can find refuge, a sanctuary if you will. A place of true safety and comfort spiritually found in the love of Christ. A place of preventative action, where girls like these can find Hope. A place of restoration, where wounded lives of trafficked victims can be healed. And also, a transition home, for those in need of real life skills, the ability to support themselves. We pray that you will share in this dream by purchasing a necklace for you or someone you love. A selection of necklaces will be posted to our Facebook page shortly. Check it out at www.Facebook.com/SaveOurSistersToday.com

Wed, 31 Aug 2011 13:07:05 -0700 The Intimate http://saveoursisterstoday.com/the-intimate http://saveoursisterstoday.com/the-intimate
"The young man who rings the bell at the brothel is unconsciously looking for God."

How could this be?

Could this evil of injustice be of God?

The young man at the brothel, what is his search? A search for the deepest desires of the soul-- FILLED.

How can the pimp be closer to truth than the moral? Because he seeks after the desire of his heart-- the God-given desire to experience and enjoy deep intimacy. Yet, he seeks in the wrong place.

The man searching for intimacy, for communion, for knowledge of another Person, he wanders.

If the man has not found true intimacy in the marriage of Christ and His Bride, he seeks the answer, the stuffing of the heart's void, in anything he can find. The man is designed to crave intimacy, passionately. Yet, when found in the wrong place, outside the Kingdom of God, whether in drugs, alcohol, materialism, work, power or control [such as control of another's sexuality], the void remains empty, as if nothing had attempted to fill it. In addition, the individuals used trying to fill the void, end up with innocence stolen and hearts broken.

Could the man at the brothel door be in search of GOD Himself? Unconsciously, as the man attempts to fill, to be filled, he fails. He searches for acceptance, for love. He feeds the need to experience something beyond this life, something glorious. Something like sex-- intimacy in its truest form.

He seeks God, intimacy masked as sex.

A man's desire. A desire for God. For the Intimate. The only One who can satisfy the void.

The victims of human trafficking are the abused women and children, but could it be that the man is a victim also? A victim of false hope, failed fullness? A victim of void intimacy-- intimacy without love and sacrifice in not intimacy at all! In the search for fullness, the deep need for intimacy, the victim-man needs Christ, the Intimate One.

Let us join in prayer for the captors of the innocent. Let us pray for the seeker, the searcher, the wanderer. A void filled with the One who fills. Intimacy Himself.

Tue, 09 Aug 2011 11:34:00 -0700 Stella's House http://saveoursisterstoday.com/stellas-house http://saveoursisterstoday.com/stellas-house

As many of you know, Morgan and I got the opportunity to go to Moldova. We visited a Home of Hope there and got to meet some of the girls who we have been praying for and loving for an entire year now! What a precious time that was! God allowed us to see them and hear about the issue of human trafficking in Moldova specifically. Our hearts have been burdened for this country. We have seen and heard of the evil there, BUT we have seen and heard of what God is doing and how He is moving and drawing this small country back to Himself.

While we were there we heard a lot about the orphans and how that directly correlates with sex trafficking of Moldova. As you will hear in the video- at the age of 16, girls are given 400 lei, about $40 American dollars and a bus ticket to their home town... they are left to the streets and expected to make it. This happens every June, and the traffickers wait for vulnerable girls to kidnap. Stella's Voice is a ministry focused on providing a safe home for orphaned girls who are left out on the streets. They work to PREVENT these girls from being in a position where they could get involved in the sex trade.

Watch the video, learn more, and pray for the country of Moldova.

As some of you have surely heard, anti-human trafficking organizations are pushing Hershey to raise the bar and commit to using Fair-trade cocoa beans in exchange for the millions they have received from child labor. This is really HUGE and could change the American view and child trafficking. Below is a link to more information on Hershey and the action steps at stake.

Sun, 26 Jun 2011 15:01:36 -0700 Flying the Coop http://saveoursisterstoday.com/flying-the-coop http://saveoursisterstoday.com/flying-the-coop During the month of May, I experienced one of my favorite things about Spring. Their name is simple yet sweet: Blue birds! The first sign of the blue birds came when I saw two birdies swooping in and out of our bluebird box- one with the brilliant colors of a "daddy" bird, another with the muted colors of a "mama" bird. My excitement spread as they gradually crafted a nest and laid five, tiny blue bird eggs. Within a few weeks, each egg hatched and delivered a squeaking, baby bird. They greeted me with beaks open wide every time I glanced into the tiny blue bird abode. Eventually, I stopped peaking in on them since I couldn't risk the chance of them jumping out before it was time for them to fly. By the time June rolled around, each bird had safely "flown the coop."

Recently,God used the lives of the blue birds to uniquely demonstrate His Word through SOS.

One of our SOS team members, Claire, will be moving to Arkansas in the fall. Her family has decided to bravely step out in faith by joining a wonderful Christian organization called "Family Life." We are so excited about her opportunity to use her life ministering to others, yet each of us are going to miss her so much.

At a recent meeting SOS, God used the story of the blue birds to help me understand more of His purpose behind Claire's move. He reminded me that even though it stinks to have a close friend move away, He has an incredible purpose for her transition. It seems as though Claire is the first one to "fly the coop", yet I am sure that God is going to be able to use her in so many ways in AK. The LORD showed me that like the bluebirds, we eventually have to spread our wings and fly- even when it's a little scary. He confirmed this through the Scripture found in Isaiah 40:31:

"...but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint..."

Please join us in praying for Claire as she and her family make this transition. Pray for her to be continually strengthened as she prepares for AK. Pray for unity within our team. Pray that we may be able to work together efficiently over state lines. Pray for us to continually seek the LORD daily in our lives.

We're so grateful for your prayers and support. We thank God for you!

"My" baby bluebirds!                                                                                    We love you Clairesy!

Mon, 07 Mar 2011 10:57:30 -0800 India trip blog http://saveoursisterstoday.com/india-trip-blog http://saveoursisterstoday.com/india-trip-blog
We serve a great and mighty God, don't we?
My parents and I leave for my very first out-of-country mission trip to India next week. When a couple friends on the SaveOurSisters team heard we would be in Delhi, their minds immediately went to the needs of rescued girls who live there.  I think all of our minds were racing and imagining the possibilities... but we didn't think it would actually happen.  When it kept coming up in conversations and e-mails, I felt like I should at least try to make a connection with the organization located there. I emailed one of the many people in charge, and she said it didn't look like a possibility.  But wait!  Remember our GREAT and MIGHTY GOD?  She said it might be possible to meet someone in charge of the girls' home (away from the house). I  thought,  "you know what, whatever GOD wants to happen, will happen."  My mind kept flipping to all things happen for a reason; all things work together for good.  No matter what would happen, I was convinced God has something great in store.

A direct leader of a girls' home in India ended up contacting me.   She  said it might be possible to visit the school that the rescued girls attend, but they were pretty busy so it all depended on a narrow window of time.  She told me the only time that would work out  for them was Thursday. It just so happens that Thursday is the ONLY day we are in Delhi with a layover between travels. Isn't God good? It gets better!  Not only will I meet the leaders of a Christian organization that SOS supports, but I will be speaking to about 100 students at a Christian school about SOS and how God can knit the hearts of sisters together across the world.  But wait!  It still gets better!  After my speech, I have been invited to have a private lunch and meet a group of the very girls that have been rescued from prostitution brothels, and will be able to give them SOS T-shirts, love notes, and pearl rings that our group has made for them.

I dont want to make any of this about me. Obviously you can see I was not the one to make this happen- it was all God. Please pray for me, that God would give me the words to say, and for all of the details to work out. Please pray for these girls, and all the others that are still having to endure the horrors of sexual slavery. Please pray for the leaders of the houses in India, that they would have wisdom and encouragement, and that the girls and mission workers  will remain safe. And finally, please pray for the rest of our trip, as we go off to other parts of India, uplifting those who serve God in the places that need His word.
We serve a GREAT and MIGHTY God. May His will be done, and may we bring Him glory....   Amy Burke

She and her family serve the victims of human trafficking in Moldova through our partner, Project Rescue. You can check out their site at: www.harvestmoldova.com.

Family

Family.

It is a word familiar to all of us.  We think of parents, siblings and extended relatives.  For many it brings a sense of home and safety. For some it conjures up thoughts of discord and hurt.  Most Westerners can anchor on a family--whether positive or negative.

Many of our girls at Freedom Home have never known family.  Some never knew mother or father.  Disease took their parents at an early age.  Some did have parents, but alcohol addiction and family problems made the home miserable.  Grandmas or aunts raised some of our girls, but they only put up with the extra child because they had to--it would shame them not to.  Loving care did not exist in the home.  State orphanages were left to raise several others.

Family is an issue little talked about in trafficking.  Most articles written and studies done point to economic issues.  These are easier to verify or site.  Women go abroad, hoping for a better life, because they are poor.   This is the accepted line.

While this may be partially true, the women are also hoping for love, for acceptance, for a place to belong. They dream of a family, and they follow the idea of marriage.  They may not know the man well, but the dream of family makes them think there will be time later to get to know one another.  That dream is shattered when, instead of a wedding, she is sold to a pimp.  Strangely so, they find security in the "love" of a pimp who showers them with gifts along with beatings and abuse.

The sad fact we see in the women at Freedom Home is that, for the most part, the horror of life did not begin at the first beating by her trafficker or pimp.

It started with abandonment by a parent in childhood.

It began when a step-father or brother or neighbor raped her as a teen.

It happened when her mother died, her father remarried and her step-mother wanted nothing to do with her.  The orphanage became her new home.

So they come to Freedom Home not understanding family, but desperately wanting and needing it.  They come longing to belong and to feel loved.

At Freedom Home we become their first real family.  We love them unconditionally.  We care for them.  We celebrate birthdays and milestones.  We disagree at times.  We care for them as if they are our natural sisters and daughters.  We introduce them to a loving Father of all--God our heavenly Father.  It is in this loving, caring and accepting environment that they begin to see that family can be different, and family can be good.

As believers, we have more than just our family of birth.   We have a new family--the family of God. We pray daily that the women will understand their new birth into God's family.

Will you pray with us that the women in Freedom Home will understand this great family that God has given to us?  Will you pray that He will help them to understand their "Abba" Father?  Will you pray that they will understand that this family is real and safe?  Will you pray that they find healing in the arms of a loving Heavenly Father through the hands of his daughters and sons who minister daily at Freedom Home?

Mon, 07 Feb 2011 18:11:37 -0800 Change Purse Party! http://saveoursisterstoday.com/change-purse-party http://saveoursisterstoday.com/change-purse-party On this past Saturday, SOS was blessed be a part of our very first Change Purse party! Our sweet friend, Anglea Moran, has started her own anti human trafficking effort called "Change Purse". She collects and re-sells donated purses to fight domestic trafficking. Her efforts are spreading like wild fire her in NC and up and down the east coast- God is using Change Purse in mighty ways! Check out her site at www.changepurse.org.

The party was an absolute blast and we loved raising awareness, all the while shopping for purses. We are very grateful for the opportunity that we had to share about SOS; also learning more about the reality of trafficking in the US. It's amazing how God can knit fashion and fervor together!

Thu, 03 Feb 2011 17:48:40 -0800 SUPER BOWL http://saveoursisterstoday.com/super-bowl http://saveoursisterstoday.com/super-bowl Please, join SOS in a 24 hour Prayer Plead, Sunday Feb. 6th, on behalf of all the children who will be exploited before, during and after the Super Bowl. Sports events are HUGE for traffickers and times of complete and utter misery for young girls who are held captive by the evil arms of slavery. We are begging YOU to get down on your knees and cry out on behalf of those who are hurting. Our God is GREAT and He can rescue these girls from the grasp of the wicked.

Mon, 31 Jan 2011 04:51:50 -0800 To small a thing.... http://saveoursisterstoday.com/to-small-a-thing http://saveoursisterstoday.com/to-small-a-thing Over the past week or so, God has really gripped my heart with the Scripture from Isaiah 49. Our Pastor spoke about it last Wednesday at our youth group, but it ad come up in my quiet time before. It is such a beautiful passage of Scripture that I decided I absolutely must share it with all of you... So here it is:

"Before I was born, the LORD called me... He said to me "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor. It is to small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob, and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you  may bring My salvation to the ends of the earth. I will keep you and make you to be a covenant for the people, to say to the captives: 'Come out' and to those in the darkness 'Be FREE!!!". Isaiah 49:1,3,6,8-9

Isn't that awesome! There God is telling us that it is too small a thing to keep His message bottled up and to ourselves. He is commanding us to GO and spread the Good News of the Gospel! I feel like the same thing applies here with SOS. We can't just keep our passion stuck here to our friends and family, rather we must go to share with our city, state, and possibly nation!

God has shown us that we cannot limit ourselves to "too small a thing". Rather we must dream in a God-sized way. The Lord has shown us this truth over and over again. He can take the smallest spark and burst it into a wild fire of fervor that no one can contain!!!

And as for the last part of those verses, I love where it says: "say to the captives come out and to those in the darkness be free"!!! That is exactly was God has called us to do. To beckon our sisters out of darkness and allow them to truly be free in the hope of the Gospel!!!! Please join us in our fight for freedom!

Fri, 21 Jan 2011 12:13:27 -0800 NFL Superbowl Trafficking! http://saveoursisterstoday.com/nfl-superbowl-trafficking http://saveoursisterstoday.com/nfl-superbowl-trafficking 100-300,000 children exploited in the United States EACH YEAR.

Superbowl 2011-- Dallas, TX-- hub for sex trafficking

Major sporting evert such as this can increase demand for sex slaves up to 80%

NFL player Jay Ratliff is taking a stand!

"It has recently come to my attention that American children are being bought and sold for profit and pleasure, and I'm mad. Men I'm talking to you. As a man, and as a father of two beautiful girls, I'm not buying it, and neither should you. If you are one of these men buying these girls, man I'm telling you, real men don't buy children. They don't buy sex." -- Jay Ratliff
